Grounding & Bonding for the Amateur Radio Station

At our recent KBARA meeting, we took a deep dive into grounding and bonding for the amateur station. The presentation covered why bonding everything to a common point matters more than any single ground rod. It also covered station and chassis bonding, single-point ground panels, lightning arrestors, tower grounding using a Rohn 25 example, and the key NEC Article 810 requirements. Other topics included what to do in older homes with 2-prong outlets, how to find and fix ground loops, and how to recognize common-mode current in the shack.

The presentation wraps up with a quick ground audit you can do at home: a walkaround checklist and a few simple tests to verify your system. As always, no grounding system guarantees survival of a direct strike, and disconnecting your feedlines when storms are coming is still the best protection.
