D-STAR, which stands for “Digital Smart Technology for Amateur Radio,” is an open-standard digital communication protocol for amateur radio operators. It allows for both digital voice and data communication over the air and can be extended globally by connecting repeaters to the internet. This enables features like worldwide communication through linked repeaters and internet gateways, high-speed data transmission, and simultaneous voice and data (like GPS position) transmission.

Key features of D-STAR

  • Digital voice and data: D-STAR can transmit digitized voice and digital data simultaneously or separately.
  • Internet connectivity: D-STAR repeaters can be connected to the internet, allowing signals to be relayed to other D-STAR users anywhere in the world, even without an HF radio.
  • Global communication: Using internet gateways, a user can communicate with other D-STAR users on repeaters in different countries.
  • Call sign routing: The system uses call sign routing commands to send communications to a specific user or repeater without needing to know their location.
  • Data transmission: In addition to voice, it can send data such as call signs, messages, and GPS positions.
  • Local and global operation: D-STAR radios can be used for local communication directly or through local repeaters, or for global communication when connected to the internet network.
